Dia de los Muertos is not the Mexican version of Halloween. It’s a 3,000 year old Mexican tradition that coincides with All Soul’s and All Saint’s Day. And, just like most holidays, it has its own set of colors.
Yellow – “Under the sun, we are all the same.” Yellow stands for unity as well as the sun.
White – Symbolizes purity, hope, and the spirits that have come to visit their loved ones. This color is often used in decorations, like facepaint and the calavera de azucar (a.k.a. sugar skull, as it is molded from sugar then adorned with feathers, icing, rhinestones and more) that is placed on the ofrenda.
Red – The color of the living. Red represents life and the blood running through our veins, a reminder that we are alive and that we are here now.
Purple – If red is for the living, then purple represents mourning, grief and suffering for the loved ones that we’ve lost.
Pink – Finally, have the color pink to signify the happiness we feel being around family, celebrating our loved ones, and paying tribute to the ones who have passed.
Dia de los Muertos is all about celebrating the circle of life. Can you incorporate these colors into this special Dia de los Muertos page? Download now and start coloring!
