Snowflake Mandalas... in the Mountains?
Sounds unbelievable, doesn’t it? Who would climb up a mountain just to make a snowflake mandala the size of three football fields? Well, as it turns out, a man named Simon Beck would.
Simon starts by sketching a mandala on his computer then printing the final design on paper. Armed with his knowledge in engineering and mapmaking experience, he identifies all the necessary factors to create a beautiful mandala design on a snowfield, including how many routes to take, pacing of his steps, and where the light strikes
“The biggest factor in how good the end result looks is usually the lighting when it's complete,” Simon said
Once he’s got everything figured out, Simon sets off with his compass, warm winter clothes, some snacks, and trusty snowshoes. For several days, he walks 5 to 9 hours a day around a vast snowfield, recreating the Snowflake Mandala he’d designed.
And that’s the story of how Snowflake Mandalas the size of up to three football fields find its way on a mountain!
